PHSE Curriculum Map

Purpose of Study

PSHE education stands for personal, social, health and economic education. Most of the PSHE curriculum that we deliver became statutory in September 2020 under the Children and Social Work Act. DfE reviews have indicated ‘… that personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education can improve the physical and psychosocial well-being of pupils. A virtuous cycle can be achieved, whereby pupils with better health and well-being can achieve better academically, which in turn leads to greater success’.

Curriculum Intent

As above stated, our approach to PSHE closely follows government guidelines on best practice.  As a part of this, we ensure that we equip pupils with a sound understanding of risk and with the knowledge and skills necessary to make safe and informed decisions, and meet the statutory government guidance for our taught age groups concerning: drug education, financial education, sex and relationship education (SRE) and the importance of physical activity and diet for a healthy lifestyle.

Curriculum Implementation

No changes to be made. Then the additional;
PSHE is taught discreetly for one hour per week. In addition to this, issues such as social skills, self awareness, personal safety and managing emotions are taught regularly throughout the week in response to situations that may occur. In addition, we use Mental Health week, assemblies and visitors to the school as an opportunity to deepen our understanding of some strands of the curriculum. These all ensure that pupils are afforded the best possible learning in PSHE, using our Therapeutic Behaviour policy to underpin these additional elements as appropriate.

Curriculum Impact

For each individual unit, there is a list of Learning Intentions and expected outcomes for our pupils. Teachers use these to assess the teaching and learning that has taken place in order to inform next steps.

Pupils are given opportunities to self-assess their learning and for pupil voice to be gauged in terms of subject knowledge;  encouraging the children to reflect on their own confidence, knowledge and understanding within the subject. Parents are also consulted when amendments are made to the RSE curriculum, at least every three years, to ensure all stakeholders in the school have a voice.
