Information about the Pupil Premium Grant

The Pupil Premium is designed to ensure that funding to tackle disadvantage reaches the pupils who need it most. The funding is allocated to Local Authorities and schools with pupils from Reception to Year 11 who are eligible for free school meals (FSM), are looked after or have parents currently in the Armed Forces.

From April 2012, the coverage of the premium was widened to include those eligible for FSM at any point in the last six years (known as “Ever 6”). From April 2014, the coverage of the premium was widened again to include those children adopted from care since 2005.

Service Pupil Premium is additional funding for schools but is not based on disadvantage. Funding is combined within Pupil Premium payments to schools and pupils are eligible if:

  • one of their parents is serving in the regular armed forces
  • they have previously been registered as a ‘service child’ in any school census in the last 6 years
  • one of their parents has died whilst serving in the armed forces  and the pupil receives a pension under the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme or the War Pensions Scheme

As of 1st April 2018, more families are eligible for Free School Meals (FSM). The new income threshold for Free School Meals (FSM) will be £7,400 net (take home pay).

Did you know that ……

  • Families who are currently paying for school meals will save around £450 a year for each primary school child if they are entitled to free school meals.
  • School children who are eligible for free school meals are entitled to a daily two-course meal.
  • When you apply for free school meals, you will also allow your child’s school to receive  Pupil Premium, which is extra money to support children from families on lower incomes.
  • If your child is in receipt of  universal infant free school meals (where your child is in Reception, Year 1 or Year 2), we recommend you apply if you believe you may be eligible for free school meals, because the protection will continue beyond Year 2.

If you think that your child/children are eligible for Free School Meals, and therefore Pupil Premium, but have not yet applied, please contact Cambridgeshire Education Welfare Benefits directly on 01223 703 200, or apply online at www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/freeschoolmeals. If you have any questions about eligibility or would like support in completing the form, please visit our School Office, who will be happy to help.
