School Uniform

It is an important part of the ethos of the school that our children identify themselves with Houghton Primary and its community.

School uniform at our school is deliberately simple in terms of adhering to a basic style and our school colours. The basics can be easily purchased from local retailers. Items with a school logo can be purchased from our online shop and collected from the school office

We ask that parents support our school uniform policy and that their child wears uniform as described below.

It is essential that all items are labelled with your child’s name.

Red jumper, sweatshirt or cardigan

Sweatshirts with the school logo are available to purchase online (see link above).
Other sweatshirts, jumpers or cardigans should be plain red with no other logos etc.

White or red polo shirt

Polo shirts with a school logo are available for purchase online (see link above).
Other polo shirts should be plain red or white with no other logos etc.

Black, dark grey or navy sports leggings tracksuit bottoms, joggers or sports shorts.

Our curriculum is very active and we make the most of every opportunity to be up and about, including outdoors. We therefore prefer our children to wear clothing throughout the day which enables comfortable movement.

Footwear

Again, as our curriculum is very outdoor and active we prefer our children to wear footwear during the day which supports their feet during a very physical day and ask that children wear trainers or similar ‘sports/active’ shoes. Trainers fastened with Velcro are best for children who are unable to tie their own shoe laces. There is no colour restriction on trainers.

We also request that every child has a pair of wellies in school so that they can access the school field rain or shine.

Jewellery/Make-up/Hair

Children must not wear any form of jewellery to school with the exception of earrings if a child has pierced ears. Earrings must be stud earrings only. They must be removed by the child during PE lessons (in accordance with Cambridgeshire PE department policy). No other piercings are allowed.

Children may wear a watch which must be removed during PE lessons. This remains their responsibility. Children may wear ‘Fitbits’ or equivalent.

Children should not wear any form of make-up including nail varnish or temporary ‘tattoos’. Hair should not be dyed. Children with long hair should wear it tied back. Long fringes should be worn off the face with a hair band or clips.

PE Kit

Children will change for PE lessons. They will not need separate trainers if they are wearing trainers during the school day.

They will need:

  • Plain white or red T Shirt (no logos please)
  • Black or navy sports shorts
  • Black, dark grey or navy jogging bottoms or sports leggings (if they are not already wearing them)

Other uniform items

All children should have a sun hat in school to wear on sunny days. Sun hats should be the ‘bucket’ style hat which cover ears and necks as well as shade the face. Sun hats should be plain. School sun hats are available to purchase online (see link above).

All children should have an ‘art shirt’ in school to wear over their uniforms during art lessons. An old large long sleeved shirt makes a good art shirt.
